ASTM D381: Gum Content in Fuels by Jet Evaporation

Summary of Test: A measured quantity of fuel is evaporated under controlled conditions of temperature and flow of air or steam. For aviation gasoline and aviation turbine fuel, the resulting residue is weighed and reported as milligrams per 100 mL. For motor gasoline, the residue is weighed before and after extracting with heptane and the results reported as milligrams per 100 mL. (For Motor Gasoline this step is necessary since many motor gasolines are purposely blended with nonvolatile oils or additives. The heptane removes these additives from the evaporation residue so that the gum content of the gasoline may be determined.)

ASTM D1655 - Specification for Aviation Turbine Fuels allows the existent gum of aviation turbine fuels to be determined by either D381 or IP 540, with D381 as the referee method. D381 specifically requires the use of steam for evaporating, whereas IP 540 allows either air or steam for evaporating aviation turbine fuels. Depending on the sample that needs to be analyzed, either the air method or the steam method has to be applied.

We FORZA offer two different versions of GUM baths with the standard 5-test station metal heating block., One is the air version and the other is the air/steam version. The difference is the working temperature, which is higher for the air/steam version due to a built-in superheater. Thus, the air/steam version has a temperature range of up to 260 °C.
